Silanes
Silanes are dual functional molecules having both organic and silicon molecules. This means they can bond with both organic and inorganic substances. The organic part bonds or interacts with a polymer or organic matrix. Whilst the silane ester part will bond or interact with inorganic substance such as glass or sand, this produces a hydrolysis or condensation reaction. Thus, silane create a chemical bridge between organic and inorganic materials.
Prime Functions
- Adhesion Promotors – aiding interfacial adhesion, especially in wet conditions
- Coupling agents- enhancing mechanical properties by improving the bond between mineral fibres or powders to a surrounding polymer matrix. Reduces water absorption by improving the bond of mineral fillers to rubbers and plastics thus maintaining mechanical and electrical properties. Can improve the DMA of mineral filled elastomers. Enhanced pigment binding to give better colour retention in pigmented materials.
- Crosslinkers – bonding or linking silane modified polymeric molecules by forming chemical bonds to form networks improving environmental, mechanical, chemical and thermal properties.
Other functions
- Surface tension modifiers- use of long alkyd chain (typically C3-C16) silanes can create a hydrophobic behaviour to fillers (eg fumed silica) or porous matrix (e.g. concrete). Silanes with hydrophilic organic groups can improve filler or pigment dispersion into water-based solutions, giving higher filler loadings or lower viscosity products)
- Moisture scavengers- silanes react with water so can be used as moisture scavengers in materials like polyurethanes.
